As the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini’s untimely death approaches on October 31, 2026, magicians around the world are commemorating his life and contributions.  Magician Sean Doolan of Magic On Main is excited to announce its newest show, Zeitgeist - Harry & Halloween. Shows will begin in Fall of 2026.

Houdini’s life is a story of persistence, personal growth, transformation and reinventing oneself.   Eight years into his magic career he was ready to give up, but one simple piece of advice changed his focus and as a result, history.  He has become an integral part of our pop culture, movies, books, music, musicals, television, theater and more.  His magical career traversed many genres of magic including close-up sleight-of-hand card magic and large stage illusions.

Halloween was Houdini’s favorite holiday.  He was fascinated with spiritualism, mediums and other paranormal phenomenon all of which will be explored in the show.  Houdini, in a desperate attempt to communicate with his deceased mother, held seances.   While he never succeeded, he never ruled out the possibility that it could be done.  Later in his career he denounced the spiritualists as fraudsters, con artists and for some, downright criminals, even testifying in Congress to attempt to expose them. However, to his dying day he remained hopeful that someone would prove him wrong.

During this show we attempt to answer the following question:  Why do we remember Houdini when there were more successful magicians during his time?   Magicians as famous or more famous than David Copperfield is today, yet we don’t know them. Magicians such as Harry Kellar, Harry Blackstone, Henry Thurston, Max Malini and Nevil Maskelyne were contemporary magical performers from Houdini’s time yet we few of us recognize their names. They sold more tickets and did more shows, yet it is Houdini that we remember.

Harry Houdini has penetrated our cultural zeitgeist. To celebrate this extraordinary, only made-in-America icon, Zeitgeist - Harry & Halloween is dedicated to him and his favorite holiday that will explore our collective consciousness through the narrative of Houdini’s life.
